Strune is a vocal-instrumental ensemble from Slovenia and has been active since 1996. The sextet brings mainly traditional folk music from Macedonia and was created by singer and violinplayer Snežana Gjorgjievska and the late singer and trumpetplayer Ljuben Dimkaroski. In 1998 the group released a first album Ritmi in zvoki Makedonije followed by Jasno Sonce in 2001, which was released internationaly on ARC World Music in 2002. Since 2003 the group is being led by Snežana Gjorgjievska and her daughter, percussionist / singer, Katinka Dimkaroska, and released a third album Igraj & Poj in 2007. Recordings of Strune can be heard on several compilations. Strune is currently preparing for the recording of a fourth album.
Strune is acclaimed for it’s pure interpretation of the folk music of Macedonia and the Balkans, and uses solely traditional acoustic instruments. In own arrangements, Strune shows the richness of the rhythms, the beauty of the melody and harmonies and the greatness of the poetry.
Strune has toured on festivals in Slovenia, Croatia, Belgium, Austria, Bosnia as well as Macedonia, where they had the chance to showcase their interpretations in festivals in Ohrid and Skopje (Skopsko Leto). Strune was the first folk band to be invited to the classical festival Interfest Bitola (Macedonia).
Strune will release a fourth album called Vezenje early 2025 with songs from Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegra.
